Surviving Summer in San Francisco

June 6, 2011

Summer in San Francisco is not known for its sunshine, so I have decided to combat the dreary weather with plants and flowers. Having a garden helps me remember that rain is good because it helps my plants grow.

The windy weather on my roof makes it impossible to maintain normal plants, but I talked to the helpful people at Sloat Nursery about my desire to have tropical plants on a roof garden. They recommended hardy succulents.

On morning walks with my dog Sadie, we usually drop into our local public garden. I often find branches of jade that i re-plant, and now they live in my urban garden too.

One of my favorite lunch spots is the Puerto Rican restaurant Sol Food, in San Rafael, CA. The restaurant is loaded with tropical plants that look like they belong in the Carribean, and I picked my favorite, a tropical ficus. I found one at a nursery in Berkeley.
They grow well in areas that receive light but are not in bright, direct sun. The back room in my kitchen has been perfect, and the plant is already sprouting beautiful new leaves.
